Unlike athletic programs that teach competitive sports, coney island ice theatre is geared towards creativity and performance on ice. Long time Brooklyn resident and world professional figure skater Val Levine began the program in 2007 with the desire to teach young children in the Coney Island area the art of figure skating.
The program meets for 90 minutes a week. Children ages 6-12 are taught the basics of figure skating using the U.S. Figure Skating Association guidelines, and at each level they receive merit badges for their accomplishments.
The skills the children learn are later incorporated into choreographed routines. At the end of the season, the children perform in a show along with professional skaters.
coney island ice theatre is affiliated with the South Brooklyn Youth Consortium Academic enrichment program.
