The Cavalier is an ultimately trusting and friendly dog to the point of being a danger to themselves; please be educated about this breed to avoid potentially deadly situations to the dog and heartache for yourselves.   You will be their common sense when it comes to cars, poisons, dangerous animals, etc.

As a puppy and young adult, they will require the type of quality attention that will help them to develop into a confident and well grounded dog in the coming years. These growing months provide treasured memories, but if you are not prepared, you will find the potty training, tasting, chewing, teething, digging and other explorations of a learning animal to be a trial.

We cannot stress enough, how the Cavalier requires a soft hand and voice. What makes a Cavalier uniquely kind and loving can be permanently damaged with one moment of anger; it doesn’t take much to create cowing fear in a sensitive animal.

Please learn enough about this breed and about raising a puppy to ensure that that our little friend is truly right for your family members and your living environment.  In your research you will find such information such as the breeds hunting skills, breed temperament and other traits that you will find a value in knowing.
You will also find this breed to be fully a companion dog, energetic and quick learning, a pleaser and more. These animals are ‘dogs’ of course but Cavaliers are not the kind to easily survive without daily attention, be stuck in the back yard, or played with or treated with a heavy hand.

We highly recommend purchasing the following Cavalier books for your own library; we can guarantee that you will often refer back to the puppy training and specific breed tips.  Getting this type of information before taking your puppy home will be an effort well spent.

Recommended reading, these two books compliment one another very well:

  • Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, 2nd Edition by Norma Moffat from the ‘Your Happy Healthy Pet Guides’
In this book you will see what makes these dogs special and for whom. You will find valuable and sensible help with housetraining and grooming. The author outlines breed specific health considerations that every owner should know.
We found her leash and basic command training to be simple, affective and kind.
Reading this book before taking your puppy home will prove quite valuable. The book is chock full of information, laughs and is an easy read.

  • Cavalier King Charles Spaniels by Susan M. Ewing from the Animal Planet series
This book gives a valuable break down on food quality and different ways of feeding, such as free feeding vs. a structured feed schedule. The author also shows how and why crating, used properly, is a comfort to a Cavalier. She also gives other health, behavioral and training techniques (a different style of training) that will compliment the book by Norma Moffat.
