John Cooper & Laura Belle Caudill Cooper: Grandparents to my "Granny Grunt", Ruby P. Stines Colegrove. Ruby's parents (Belva Cooper & John Roy Stines) both died when she was very young. Ruby and her brothers became orphans and Ruby lived with relatives who needed her help with their small children. Why is it that John & Laura Belle did not take them in? Did they even know who Ruby and her brothers were?
John & Laura Belle lived and spent most of their time together between Floyd and Harlan Counties. Because the two counties neighbor each other and because a portion of Floyd County became Harlan, it is hard to determine exactly where and when they lived there.
For many months, I have been on a search for the headstone for John & Laura Belle. Emma, Floyd County, Kentucky is the burial location for John Cooper (listed on his death certificate, above), but the trip there was unsuccessful. My mother and I made several trips around Emma and it's neighboring unincorporated communities searching for his headstone along with many others. Still the search continues.
On Laura Belle's death certificate (above), Vanceburg, KY is the location where she is buried. Why Vanceburg? I do not have the slightest idea. Unable to read the writing of what looked like Woodlawn Cemetery, another journey became on the search for Laura Belle's headstone. After arriving in Vanceburg the first stop made was a florist who directed us to the Woodland Cemetery. Much to our surprise and unlike many other counties traveled to, Woodland Cemetery was the only cemetery around that area. For a rather large cemetery, we found the headstone for Laura Belle Cooper. And boy oh boy it was a surprise. She is buried next to a Sylvester Cooper 1888 - 1955. I am still researching the name and his DOB and DOD.

Just to the right of the tree (pictured above) on the tree line are several other Cooper headstones. I am not certain that these Coopers are related to Laura Belle Caudill Cooper's husband, John Cooper.
The headstones above are: (left to right) Rose Z Cooper 1881-1919; Norma O. Cooper 1917-1924; Lolam Cooper 1910-1919 and Charles H. Cooper "POP" 1874-1963.
