Betsie & Platte River

Northwest Michigan Fishing

This report is from Jon's Guide service a Michigan based fly fishing guide service located in South Boardman Michigan and having remote locations in Baldwin Michigan and Newaygo Michigan, providing guided fly fishing and instruction on Michigan's  Rivers.  Fly Fishing reports for Salmon, Steelhead, Trout & smallmouth bass. Jon's Guide Service offers guided fly fishing services year round on the Betsie River.

The Betsie River provides the lowest amount of fishing pressure while providing great numbers of salmon to fish. The Betsie and Platte Rivers are great opportunities to fish to less pressured fish, making streamer fishing and swinging flies much more productive than heavyly fished rivers. The salmon run on the Betsie and Platte starts in late August and will continue strong into October. The platte and Betsie also provide good to great fall steelhead and lake run brown trout opportunities into December.

Surf fishing with a fly can be very productive in the fall off the mouth of the Platte and in Betsie lake. Trips on these rivers are offered for fly fisherman, light gear fisherman or a combination of both.

Jon's Guide Service has been guiding Michigan rivers for over 25 years and can help make a ordinary day of fishing a trip of a lifetime!

Platte River

The Platte River is a small to medium sized river that flows into Lake Michigan, with runs of both steelhead and salmon.  It is also a good trout fishery in its upper sections, with good hatches of mayflies, caddis, and stoneflies. The Platte River is known for its clear almost tap water clarity. Its waters are shallow in most areas creating challenging fly fishing. The Platte River is known best for its fall fishery. Platte bay provides great Coho or silver salmon fishing, Lake Run browns, and awesome fall steelhead fishing, as well as Chinook salmon fishing.

Although the access and wade fishing is good on this river, the use of a guide will always provide a safe, exciting educational experience, and put you on the best fishing the river has to offer at that time of year.
