Dear Randy, Please accept the congratulations and gratitude from the Parade Board and myself. The Charros del Sur have been accepted to participate in the Battle of Flowers Parade 2013. I look forward to working with you again this year. Thank you for being so prompt with your paperwork. I will send out the next Parade packet in the next few days. We have a very full Parade this year and limited space to house horses under the freeway before the Parade due to all the new constructions near the Pearl. With that in mind, there were two special items that were considered by the Parade Board when they reviewed your entry. One was your request for a truck and trailer. The Parade Board was unable to honor your request and has removed approval for any vehicle to accompany the Charros from your entry form for 2013. The other was the request for the female members of your Battle of Flowers Parade group to ride separately. I am so sorry but we cannot honor that request either, there just is not enough room this year. All Cavalcade groups are limited to 20 riders. My apologies, I know we will be working on how to better accommodate all the Cavalcade groups in 2014. I hope you and all your riders have a very nice holiday season. Thanks, Catherine Helland

Irene and I are leaving for the National Finals in Zacatecas on Wednesday. We are flying to Mexico City, then to Zacatecas. We will be staying at the Hotel Emporio across from the Cathedral. Zacatecas is a beautiful City and we want to see the sights. The last time we were there, we stayed at the Old Bull ring which had been converted to a 5 star hotel. It was beautiful, but too far from the downtown. Going shopping, Irene’s favorite things, was a real trek. Zacatecas is in the mountains, and it seemed like you walked uphill to get to the central zone and then uphill to get back. Hope to see three or four Charreadas and the girl’s finals while we are there.

There is an article in the Express News about how San Antonio is a major tourist location. It is too bad that the Charros have not been able to tap this resource. It could be a major source of money. Even Rodeo has been able to do this, but not the Charros. If you go to Tejas Rodeo on Saturday Night, you will see a thousand people paying $10.00 to see a rodeo, every Saturday. The Charros could do the same thing, but they would have to work together. They also would need a covered arena. Just imagine, an exhibition with the best Charros every Saturday, with one or two Competitions a month on Sunday. Then, every four months, a major sponsored tournament. It could be done, but everybody has to work together.

The National Charro Finales from Zacatecas, starts on October 16. It will be broadcast live on decharros(dot)com. If you have never seen Charreada, the precursor of the American rodeo, you should watch. If you are an animal rights activist, you should watch and you will see that if you use healthy animals and the contestants know what they are doing, the danger to the animals is minimal.

Just got a nasty letter from that pathetic little creature Rodrigo Gaona. I guess he is like his father, no class. Of course you can see that, when you go onto the Association de Charros de San Antonio ranch, the place is a pig sty. Manure piled all over the place, horses dying. It is too bad, what could have been a beautiful place, the center of Traditional Mexican Culture in South Texas, is nothing more then basura.

Diez y Sies Charreadas and a Jaripeo canciled because of rain. We need a covered arena in Bexar County. One that all Charros can use. A place where the tradition is more important then any one Charro or any one family. Charreria should be preserved and that will only happen if the Charros work together.

We had a great time at the National Finals USA, in El Paso. The lienzo was made of West Texas Rock and very attractive, with the Franklin Mountains as a back drop. Francisco “Pancho” Flores did a spectacular Mangana, standing on his horse doing Florero, while they passes the horse. He drops into the saddle to make the catch. We had lunch with Sr. Castillo, who was the announcer. He has been a Charro since 1950. He was given the golden spur, for his work with Charreria. He is a very Interesting man. He was born in Mexico City, but learned to be a Charro in Guadalajara. He now lives in Washington State, where he helped start 14 Charro teams. He is a wealth of information about the nuances of Charreada. Looking forward to the National Finals in Zacatecas.
